Mo Mo's Meat Market

click here for mo-mos-meat-market Yelp reviews

Tahoe Park is very very happy. At 58th Street and Broadway, E. Sacramento's Mo Mo's Meat Market is no joke, Mmmmm good, tongue slapp'n flavor! Some of the best B.B.Q I've had in a long time.

I spent close to 8 years in the Midwest as a kid eating southern food & barbecue. I didn't know at the time, but I was eating really good food. It wasn't until I came back to Cali (enter LL Cool J track here) that I realized my taste buds were craving that good barbecue I used to eat. The hunt was on and a few places....and I mean a few could come close. I'm so happy to have a place that not only comes close, but compares to the best I've had.

I stopped in today to get a sandwich. They have 3 on the menu - chicken, hot link, tri tip. As soon as I walked in the gentleman behind the counter greeted me with a smile and a sample of their seafood chowder, their chili, and the bbq'd chicken! How cool is that!? And Man-O-Man these were all very tasty. I got the chicken sandwich the way he likes it and I was in heaven. I think I ate some of the paper that was wrapped around it too.

Mo Mo's is a meat market first. They sell an assortment of meats (all parts), sausage, wings, fish, etc. Most by bulk or place an order for a party from one of their 10 different party menu selections.

A traditional yet unique meat market
Go get some. It's that good.

Warm your bones with some local Winter drinks

Vrienden Ale

OneSpeed in East Sac has this on tap right now and I had the pleasure of enjoying a taste (thanks Michael) the other day. You wouldn't know the 8.5% abv. as is floats over the palette with it's smooth crisp flavors.

Get a Belgian Brewmaster and a master of Belgian brewing together and there's sure to be spontaneous imagination that leads to micro-organisms mingling in fermentation.
Allagash and New Belgium Breweries collabeerated on this one. It's brewed with the slightly fruity hibiscus flower, the aromatic Brettanomyces, and the flavor-boosting Lactobacillus.
They recommend pairing it with creamy, soft cheeses and charming Vrienden - that's friends in Flemish.

Continuing on -

This came straight from the Press.....Sacramento Press. I thought it was worthy to post up just for the "Two Brothers" drink alone.

In addition to some exciting low key racing and holiday festivities this will be their coming-out party for the Sacramento Valley Velodrome Project.

The set up is the Goldsprints style roller racing. You ride on my bikes with forkmounts and flat pedals with toe clips. It's really easy. Everyone that rides a bike should try it. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The races only last 10-20 seconds depending on the format. Time permitting, they may run some kilo's and grudge matches at the end of the night for giggles.

A $5 donation to the cause would be gratefully appreciated.

Sign-ups will begin at 5PM  (1811 E Street, Sacramento, CA)

As always juniors race for free, but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Racing will start at 6PM. All racers will do a 250m time trial.
They'll bracket a maximum of the 16 fastest men and 16 fastest women, then run sudden death elimination rounds.

The first 40 to sign-up will get a free spoke card.

All you need to bring is your mojo!

Feel free to direct any questions to dino@biketrailsavage.com

Velodrome more than a dream?
By Matt Peters -- Sacramento Bee Correspondent
(Published Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002)

The dream has gone 'round and 'round inside the heads of local cyclists for many years.

But the dream is inching ever closer to reality, meaning that within the next couple of years cyclists from around the world could be going around and around in Sacramento for decades to come.

To date, the group seeking to create the Sacramento Valley Cycling and Inline Park has been given 80 acres at Mather Regional Park and funding for a feasibility study.

"It's a dream. But it's beyond a dream," said Warren Geissert, a member of the Sacramento Cycling Park Association, a nonprofit group trying to make the dream of bringing a velodrome to Sacramento a reality.

As outlined in the association's concept paper, the cycling and inline park facilities at Mather Park would be comprised of:

-- A 250-meter banked oval cycling track.

-- A 200-meter inline skating and bicycle warm-up track.

-- A medical facility adjacent to the velodrome for scientific sports research.

-- A paved cycling trail with distance markers suitable for recreational and competitive human power sports.

-- A BMX track.

-- Infrastructure to support the needs of the disabled athlete.

-- A marked cyclocross/mt. bike course.

-- A climbing wall.

-- And a network of trails connecting the complex with the surrounding community.

"I had started thinking about my kids riding bikes," said Steve Rex, a custom frame builder and a member of the cycling park association. "Sacramento would be such a perfect place (for a track) ... summer evenings would be so nice."

A velodrome would open a world of competitive and recreational opportunities for local cyclists of all abilities, including open training sessions for experienced track riders, learning sessions for beginners, kids sessions and education.

The facility also would have the potential for drawing world-class cycling talent. Plans call for the velodrome at Mather Park to be built by Ralph Sch¸rmann of Germany, a third-generation track designer and builder.

The 250-meter track would provide a more intimate atmosphere and more exciting ride than the 330-meter tracks found in most U.S. velodromes. According to Rex, an international-class track immediately would merit consideration as a host site for the national championships, which usually are held in Indianapolis or Trexlertown, Pa.

The velodrome also is the listed site within the Northern California bid to be host for the 2012 Olympics. The backing from the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee "opened a lot of doors for us," said Linda Elgart. She and her husband, John, are former national track champions and members of the velodrome group.

The velodrome group also has met with the Sacramento Sports Commission, which said it would support the group's effort to bring the Olympic Trials cycling event here in 2004.

The feasibility study is expected to be completed in late summer, at which time the group will begin attempting to raise the estimated $1.5 million needed for construction. The entire facility is expected to cost $3 million to $4 million. The goal is to complete the track in time for Sacramento to be host for the Masters Track Nationals in 2003.

That timeline would enable the facility to be host to a world-class event before 2005, when the International Olympic Committee decides the bid.

The only other track in Northern California is in San Jose, but the surface at the Hellyer Velodrome is too rough and the banks are too shallow to hold a national-level event.

"It makes more sense to put (a velodrome) here than almost anywhere else," said Geissert, who noted Sacramento's long fair-weather season, its warm summer nights and the large cycling population in the region. "Sacramento is the ideal place to put a velodrome."

Banjo Bro's Waterproof Backpack

It started with my search & reviews for the perfect cycling commuter weather backpack and ended with the Banjo Brothers' Whitey Von.

I like the messenger style & feel too, but for my daily commutes with extra clothes that weigh on your shoulders and back....this is the setup to make you feel more comfortable. It's built with nice breathable padding on the back and straps for the longer sweat back rides.
Dually noted - The Whitey Von is inner lined with a separate welded-seam replaceable liner and an outer nylon shell that's durable enough to take a bullet. The top roll down system pretty much guarantees all you goodies will be kept dry.
If you're in the market for a durable, waterproof, use it for whatever you want backpack....then consider this one. I would recommend.

  • Medium – 1500 Cubic inches / 17″ Tall x 12″ Wide x 8″ deep
  • Waterproof 2-layer design: outer tarp material wears like iron; replaceable waterproof liner keeps contents dry in a downpour (will not keep water out if submerged, in case underwater-riding is your hobby).
  • Wide padded straps distribute load more evenly than messenger bags
  • Sits lower on the back than standard backpacks to reduce blind spots
  • Chest strap and removable waist strap for stability
  • Large reflective stripes and tab for safety light
  • 2 quick-access side pockets
  • Shoulder strap mounted cell phone holder

Spin Burger Bar

The same owners (Fred/Matt Haines of SRO Inc) and former great location of 33rd Bistro Midtown on the NW corner of K/16th Street have opened Spin Burger Bar. The definition of Spin here is bike + records. Sounds good to me.

Fred is offering up some tasty burgers with a Spin. I'm not sure if that's their slogan, but I'd sell it to them.
They just opened the doors for a soft opening on Wed right before Thanksgiving, so it's pretty dang new. I went there for lunch today with a couple of friends and had to wait awhile for the food. The manager actually bought us a round to make up for it......so we're all good.
The menu is decent looking and I decide to "create my burger" from a list of yummy ingredients. This one has cambazola (blue cheese/brie cheese), garlic roasted mayo, & pomegranate ketchup - $8.95. This is a "tasty burger" just like Jules said in Pulp Fiction. No kidding. Real talk.
My friends got the Mac-n-cheese & the Chili. Both liked their plates. (the M&C is only $2.95)
So, they're building a stage for the sprint bikes and will be doing races by the end of the week. Late night races or time trail runs will go into the weee hours of the morning.

I must say that I will be back to Spin. Again, the burger was very good and looking forward to some sprints!

I hope they get into the Sacramento cycle scene & advocacy. This will only make this place prosper.
Others already have & are getting these Gold Sprints installed in their shops, So I foresee Internet challenges between different groups.                        video of a sprint race

More PIZZA blogging?? Of course.

When we aren't stuffing our face with OneSpeed's or Luigi's pie, we make our own. With the help of Trader Joe's dough that is. Now that my wife has shown me the ropes, these are amazingly pretty easy to make. It has become an all hands on family participation pizza night now. Perfect!
Kate likes plain cheese & some tomatoes.

For our creation, we added sliced rosemary chicken, fresh mozzarella & sliced garlic.

Man, I'm getting hungry now.

Date Night tonight.

A night with no plans - check
Babysitter - check
Money - no check but we'll make it work.

This will be our first visit to the new Press Bistro. It now occupies the old Dragonfly next to Zocalos on Capital / 18th Street.

More to come after we go eat.  (:

http://thepressbistro.com/

Well it happened. We found another fantastic eatery here in our lovely downtown area. We've been reading & hearing good reviews on The Press and they did not disappoint us.

Here's J finishing the last of the dishes before our babysitter got here.
We arrived alittle early so we could sit at the bar and have a drink. Those of us with kids know that any chance to sit in a bar chair, you take it.
The wife had a great red wine blend and I had a Downtown Brown on tap to start things off. We chose to spend this time at the bar to look over the menu and select our meal before our friends showed up. No time to waste.
Tapas were first (3 for $10): The fried garlic meatballs were awesome.
J ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese and I got the Hanger Steak. We loved it!
Go to The Press Bistro. Everything we ate here - Did Not Suck...

These are Scrumptious and perfect for the holidays

This is straight from my friend and bro-n-law that I will share with you (you should be feeling really lucky right about now). I've had the pleasure of indulging these stuffed mushrooms and sipping the wonderful flavors of an Aiena wine once or twice. These are two things that will make you happy.

Dear Family & Friends of Aiena Wines,

I raise a glass to the spirit of family and what is near to them — the
welcoming of friends and strangers as community.

We hope you enjoy Mary Aiena Sena's time honored Stuffed Mushroom recipe as
much as we have over the years.

Aiena’s Stuffed Mushrooms

12-16 Large Mushroom Caps (stems removed)
1 Cup Ricotta Cheese
1/3 Cup Plain Breadcrumbs (slighted toasted beforehand if desired)
1/4 Cup  Pecorino Romano Grated Cheese
1/4 Cup Parmigiano-Reggiano Grated Cheese
2 Tablespoons Chopped Parsley
1 Large Garlic Clove (finely chopped or 1/3 teaspoon garlic powder)
A Dash of Sea Salt and Ground Black Pepper.
1/3 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4-5 Tablespoons of water

Place Ricotta cheese in mushroom caps.  Blend together the next 6
ingredients (breadcrumbs, cheeses, parsley, garlic, salt and pepper) and
press onto the tops of the ricotta cheese capped mushrooms. Press a slight
indentation with thumb into the center of the mushroom. Sprinkle each top of
mushroom in and around indentation with half of the olive oil, while adding
the rest of the olive oil to the bottom of the roasting pan around the
mushrooms with the 5 tablespoons of water.
Bake in preheated over at 375 degrees for 30-45 minutes, until fork easily
goes through the mushrooms and tops are light golden brown in color.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Lou Sena
Grandson of Mary Aiena Sena

Art & Bike come together.

Really, taking a photo of a bike is art in itself. Then taking a photo of a bike with art in the photo.....
Bad ass! My custom build that's changing every week depending on the music I listen to.

Another bottom build is my Raleigh daily commuter. Which I can't seem to find any pics of at the moment. I'll update in a few....
Found one. I basicaly blacked out everything that is showing white in this photo. The Wienmann's I gave to my son and replaced the seat to a Brooks.

I LOVE good coffee!

I had the wonderful experience about 15 years ago to work, learn & participate in the roasting from one of the founding fathers of Java City (Steve Priley of River Rock Coffee).
This is not Steve, but a nice quick look into the process. Watch a visit with Moschetti Coffee in Vallejo.  http://vimeo.com/9463422
