2012 NAHBS - Blog

http://2012.handmadebicycleshow.com/2012-news/2012/03/03/desalvo-custom-cycles-2/

I can not be happier than to hop on my bike and ride my mere 6 miles to volunteer for the North American Handmade Bike Show this year in my hometown of Sacramento, California. I say mere because of the fact that some people rode over 450 miles to arrive here in Sactown. That just shows the impact that NAHBS has had, not only on communities in our country, but on other countries like Japan, UK, and Australia to name only a few.

As a volunteer, I was able to get in the show early, make my laps, grab some swag, check out the new bikes and talk shop with a handful of builders. One builder I had a tough time getting a hold of, but grabbed my chance when he was available, was Mike DeSalvo.

Mike DeSalvo isn't a new comer to the scene, but his inspirations and creativity are fresh with every build. Mike is owner of DeSalvo Custom Cycles from Ashland, Oregon. He has been winning NAHBS awards since 2005, and respectively in 2006, 2008, and 2010. When I was talking with Mike about what he wanted to do different this year than from past years, he humbly stated, "to bring a good product".

Mike brought his "good product" in art forms of steel & titanium cross bike, 29er, road, and dirt road bikes. I also came across one of Mike's cruiser bikes five aisles away from his booth. Some of DeSalvo's inspirations were using early 1970 Porsche color swatches as seen on the dirt road bike. With influences seen in the ventana rear end on the beautiful 29er mountain build. The 29er was new to DeSalvo and I think we can look forward to his excitement of building up another for next year.

Unfortunately, as a small builder/business owner, there's much time spent away from the hands-on weld. Being able to manage your time correctly can get you back into the shop where the love happens. DeSalvo's love & joy is being in the shop building bikes. You can bet, he tries hard to swiftly accommodate the paperwork side of the business so he can get back into the building side of the business.

I asked Mike, "What's unique about your design that sets you apart?".
Mike replied, "You mean, why would someone buy my bike?"

I think we can all agree that the unique style of all the builders here at NAHBS set them apart from one-another. However, in DeSalvo's case the value plays a vital role. Custom builds start at $3000 which is a huge attraction in this market.

I ended my conversation with the infamous "What does the future look like?". "There's more of an awareness now. Buying a bike used to be going to a bike shop. But now you can buy a bike from someone in this country who will make it for you, with your input. The more people are aware of the custom builders the better the builders will do."

This 2012 show is one of the largest shows to date and we can only hope that they will continue to grow with new builders and visions. Once again, the NAHBS is showcasing some of the best talent there is and you can feel the excitement here in Sacramento!

California Craft Brewery Month - Bill SCR66

Follow this link to read the SCR Bill introduced by Senator Corbett!!
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bill/sen/sb_0051-0100/scr_66_bill_20120221_amended_sen_v98.html

Not any mention of the rich history of the first timers here in our fine city of Sacramento, but I'll take it.

Also here is an exerpt from the Sac Bee about Beer Week and a mention to the "bill":

Sacramento City Council to honor local brewers and Sacramento Beer Week

Hear ye, hear ye: It's time to honor beer! That's right, local brewers will be honored at tonight's City Council meeting with a resolution in honor of California Craft Brewer Month and the success of Sacramento Beer Week, which runs through Sunday at pubs and restaurants around the region.

California Craft Brewer Month was passed via SCR 66 in the California State Senate on a 36-0 vote, acknowledging California as the birthplace of the microbrew movement and the emergence of the state's craft beer industry. Tonight's ceremonies at City Council chambers will also recognize the thriving local craft beer industry and Sacramento Beer Week, which has turned into one of the city's most successful and expansive food/drink celebrations since starting just three years ago.

Saturday's Capital Beerfest at Cal Expo, a core event of Sacramento Beer Week, attracted some 80 breweries and about 2,700 attendees.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale Brew Review

Sierra Nevada Celebration Fresh Hop Ale 2011
from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico, CA

ABV 6.80%

This year, I first had this on tap at the Hilltop Tavern in Sacramento, CA.
I enjoyed this on tap much more than the six pack I bought on my bike ride home the same night. This review is for the bottle.

Appearance - poured a medium blonde/amber color with high carbonation. A great 3/4 inch creamy colored head that dissipated rather quick due to the carbonation and leaving good lacing.
Smell - generous pine aroma with spicy hops.
Taste - I'm growing into the IPA trend here in Ca it seems. I never really liked the hoppy brews until recently. I like the carbonation of this ale and the clean finish. Much lighter on the Winter spices than expected (a good thing in my book), but there's some darker fruity spices involved in this.
Mouthfeel - you get the hop flavors up front and then rolls to the spicy flavors. I was expecting the hop hit at the end like most, but not this one.
Overall - Ok, my secret is I never cared for the OG Sierra Nevada brew. I know....it seems like a crime, however it was too hoppy for me. My roommate at the time drank enough of it for the both of us and local support reasons. With that said, I like this because it's not too complex on the taste for a Winter brew. I'm a big foodie and want my beer to complement my eats, not overwhelm it.

Mo Mo's Meat Market

click here for mo-mos-meat-market Yelp reviews

Tahoe Park is very very happy. At 58th Street and Broadway, E. Sacramento's Mo Mo's Meat Market is no joke, Mmmmm good, tongue slapp'n flavor! Some of the best B.B.Q I've had in a long time.

I spent close to 8 years in the Midwest as a kid eating southern food & barbecue. I didn't know at the time, but I was eating really good food. It wasn't until I came back to Cali (enter LL Cool J track here) that I realized my taste buds were craving that good barbecue I used to eat. The hunt was on and a few places....and I mean a few could come close. I'm so happy to have a place that not only comes close, but compares to the best I've had.

I stopped in today to get a sandwich. They have 3 on the menu - chicken, hot link, tri tip. As soon as I walked in the gentleman behind the counter greeted me with a smile and a sample of their seafood chowder, their chili, and the bbq'd chicken! How cool is that!? And Man-O-Man these were all very tasty. I got the chicken sandwich the way he likes it and I was in heaven. I think I ate some of the paper that was wrapped around it too.

Mo Mo's is a meat market first. They sell an assortment of meats (all parts), sausage, wings, fish, etc. Most by bulk or place an order for a party from one of their 10 different party menu selections.

A traditional yet unique meat market
Go get some. It's that good.

Warm your bones with some local Winter drinks

Vrienden Ale

OneSpeed in East Sac has this on tap right now and I had the pleasure of enjoying a taste (thanks Michael) the other day. You wouldn't know the 8.5% abv. as is floats over the palette with it's smooth crisp flavors.

Get a Belgian Brewmaster and a master of Belgian brewing together and there's sure to be spontaneous imagination that leads to micro-organisms mingling in fermentation.
Allagash and New Belgium Breweries collabeerated on this one. It's brewed with the slightly fruity hibiscus flower, the aromatic Brettanomyces, and the flavor-boosting Lactobacillus.
They recommend pairing it with creamy, soft cheeses and charming Vrienden - that's friends in Flemish.

Continuing on -

This came straight from the Press.....Sacramento Press. I thought it was worthy to post up just for the "Two Brothers" drink alone.

Tour De Lights....Tonight

TONIGHT!

There's a Holiday Light Bike Ride for tonight Thursday the 23rd. The weather has kept pushing this along and now is the time.
All are invited - from families to single rider. Come and enjoy a magical experience through the East Sac Fabulous Forties Christmas Lights Ride.

Tour of Lights

We'll meet at "The Electric Bike Shop" on 3644 J Street (across from the Bonn Lair Pub & Peete's Coffee) around 5:30-6ish pm. Just power up your bike lights, dress in layers, wrap the bambino and bring your warm refreshments. Should the spirit move you to dress up as Santa or string colored lights on your bike, this is the perfect occasion. Go to Target for your battery xmas lights or check out this link (it's good for New Years, anytime night rides, or next year).
http://www.monkeylectric.com/m132s_gallery.htm

Expect plenty of opportunities to ooh and ahh over the gorgeous holiday displays, much good cheer, creative decorated bikes (and cyclists) and whatever yummy snacks you brought.

See and be seen

Cyclists new to night riding should make sure to have a white headlight (one that blinks attracts even more attention), and a rear red reflector and/or blinkie. Being visible is a key factor in safe night riding.

More PIZZA blogging?? Of course.

When we aren't stuffing our face with OneSpeed's or Luigi's pie, we make our own. With the help of Trader Joe's dough that is. Now that my wife has shown me the ropes, these are amazingly pretty easy to make. It has become an all hands on family participation pizza night now. Perfect!
Kate likes plain cheese & some tomatoes.

For our creation, we added sliced rosemary chicken, fresh mozzarella & sliced garlic.

Man, I'm getting hungry now.

Date Night tonight.

A night with no plans - check
Babysitter - check
Money - no check but we'll make it work.

This will be our first visit to the new Press Bistro. It now occupies the old Dragonfly next to Zocalos on Capital / 18th Street.

More to come after we go eat.  (:

http://thepressbistro.com/

Well it happened. We found another fantastic eatery here in our lovely downtown area. We've been reading & hearing good reviews on The Press and they did not disappoint us.

Here's J finishing the last of the dishes before our babysitter got here.
We arrived alittle early so we could sit at the bar and have a drink. Those of us with kids know that any chance to sit in a bar chair, you take it.
The wife had a great red wine blend and I had a Downtown Brown on tap to start things off. We chose to spend this time at the bar to look over the menu and select our meal before our friends showed up. No time to waste.
Tapas were first (3 for $10): The fried garlic meatballs were awesome.
J ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese and I got the Hanger Steak. We loved it!
Go to The Press Bistro. Everything we ate here - Did Not Suck...

Art & Bike come together.

Really, taking a photo of a bike is art in itself. Then taking a photo of a bike with art in the photo.....
Bad ass! My custom build that's changing every week depending on the music I listen to.

Another bottom build is my Raleigh daily commuter. Which I can't seem to find any pics of at the moment. I'll update in a few....
Found one. I basicaly blacked out everything that is showing white in this photo. The Wienmann's I gave to my son and replaced the seat to a Brooks.

Dad's Kitchen.

Christine & Julio took over this great local hangout and have put much love into the menu, beer selection and ambiance.
http://www.ilovedadskitchen.com/

I've had my first batch of micro brews in a CAN here. Cans eliminate light damage and they hold far less oxygen than bottles, so canned beers stay fresher longer (I'll leave that up to you to decide). The chili goes wonderful with a canned beer....or a tap beer, or soda, or even water.
The back patio is perfect for summer gatherings and listening to live music sets. Alkali Flats honky tonk'd us this night as shown here. Kate had a blast dancing!

Guy Fieri from "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives" came by to film an upcoming episode of Dad's Kitchen.
Thank you & keep up the hard work guys...it's paying off.        http://www.ilovedadskitchen.com/takeoutmenu.pdf
